Sydney's New 'Metro Below' Tour Uncovers the Hidden Design Secrets Beneath the City

A rare chance to discover the engineering, architecture and design thinking behind one of Australia's most ambitious public transport projects.

If you're a regular Sydney Metro rider who zips between stations without a second thought, you're not alone. Gadigal's striking design might catch your eye, but most of us are too busy commuting to stop and ask: why does it look like that?

A brand new experience called Metro Below lets you finally get those answers. This two-hour guided walking tour peels back the layers of the Sydney Metro, revealing the creative and technical decisions that shaped every tunnel, platform and station.

Walking with an expert guide, participants visit multiple station concourses and learn how massive tunnels were bored beneath Sydney's skyscrapers and streets. You'll discover why no two stations are alike, and how intelligent design keeps millions of daily trips flowing without disruption. The tour also covers the driverless train technology, platform screen door systems, and the hidden public artworks that give each station a distinct neighbourhood identity.

The journey begins outside Waterloo Metro Station — just look for the guide in hi-vis gear — and wraps up roughly two hours later at Victoria Cross Station in North Sydney. Pro tip: stick around North Sydney afterwards to check out the wave of new eateries and coffee spots that have opened near the station.

What to bring: a valid Opal card or contactless bank card for tapping through the gates, comfortable walking shoes, drinking water, and a fully charged phone for all the photos you'll want to take.

Upcoming tour dates: August 29, September 19, October 17, November 29 and December 12, 2026. Standard tickets are priced at AUD $20, with a limited number of free community spots still available on select dates if you move fast.
