In Kong Sunghwan's paintings, water appears clear and transparent, yet remains an elusive subject that can never be fully grasped. His works are not realistic depictions, but abstractions born through his senses and contemplation. Light settling on the water's surface trembles faintly, ripples spread like an invisible breath, and forms in the transparent depths seem to surface only to recede again. The artist gazes long at these moments of subtle change, transforming natural landscapes into pure sensory experience.
For Kong, "abstraction" does not mean the disappearance of form — rather, it is the state in which the concreteness of reality transforms into sensation, rhythm, light, and vibration through prolonged observation of water. In his paintings, abstraction is not the absence of form, but the process of form trembling and transitioning into another realm of perception. Thus, Kong's water appears realistic, yet quietly flows into abstraction within. It is another landscape that begins at the edge of the visible — an inner ripple revealed through the surface of water.
