Top Free Things to Do in Paris This Summer

Open-Air Cinema at La Villette

From July 22 to August 16, 2026, the open-air film festival returns to the Prairie du Triangle at Parc de la Villette, with a programme dedicated to forests, wide-open spaces, and nature stories. Horror fans can catch 'The Blair Witch Project' or Tim Burton's gothic 'Sleepy Hollow,' while animation lovers will be swept away by Miyazaki masterpieces — from 'Princess Mononoke' to 'My Neighbor Totoro.' Also screening: the breathtaking 'Into the Wild,' the adventure film 'The Animal Kingdom,' and Jean-Jacques Annaud's 'The Bear.'

Take a Dip in the Seine

After more than a century-long ban, Parisians can once again plunge into the Seine each summer. Until August 30, three riverside swimming sites are open to the public: Bercy and Grenelle return at the same spots, while Bras-Marie has moved just metres away under the Pont Louis-Philippe.

Performances at Château de Morsang-sur-Orge

The Paris l'été festival returns for its 36th edition from July 11 to August 4. A standout event in the gardens of Château de Morsang-sur-Orge features Amalia Salle's 'Vivaldines' blending Vivaldi with hip-hop, the Gnawa-infused ballet 'Amin' by Compagnie Dyptik, and inflatable puppet performance 'L'Appel du large.' Kite-making and balloon workshops round out the afternoon.

The Silhouette open-air short film festival returns August 28 to September 5, 2026 for its 25th edition. On the stepped lawns of Parc de la Butte-du-Chapeau-Rouge, audiences can watch free selections across International, Documentary, Student, Hybrid, and Youth categories — all with one of the best views over northern Paris.

Paddleboarding on the Canal

Paris Plages offers free paddleboarding, canoeing, and kayaking workshops daily from 1pm to 7pm until August 30 at the Bassin de la Villette. The only requirements: knowing how to swim, and under-18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Eco-Documentaries on the Railway Tracks

The Gare aux Docs eco-documentary festival runs Fridays and Saturdays until August 1, screening films on a giant screen set up on the Petite Ceinture railway tracks at La REcyclerie. This year's lineup includes 'The Intelligence of Trees,' 'Wilding,' and 'Transmettre.'

Street Art at the Petit Palais

Paris street art heavyweight Mehdi Ben Cheick takes over the Petit Palais once again with 'We Are [Still] Here,' running until September 20. Over 70 artists from around the world — including Americans Swoon and Shepard Fairey, and local legends Invader and Seth — display works that converse with the museum's permanent collection.

Biopic Screenings at La Seine Musicale

MK2's Cinéma Paradiso outdoor series lands on the forecourt of La Seine Musicale from July 21 to 24. This year's biopic-themed lineup features Baz Luhrmann's 'Elvis,' 'A Complete Unknown' with Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, 'Rocketman' chronicling Elton John, and 'Aline' starring Valérie Lemercier as Céline Dion.
