Most visitors to Kyoto never make it past the well-trodden temples of Higashiyama. But venture just an hour north into Nantan City's Sonobe district and you'll discover a corner of Kyoto Prefecture where 'Japan's oldest' and 'Japan's only' aren't marketing slogans — they're everyday reality. Board a bus from JR Sonobe Station (they run roughly once an hour, so a little planning goes a long way), and after a three-minute ride and a serene ten-minute stroll through rice fields, you'll arrive at a true hidden gem: Ikimi Tenmangu Shrine.

Ikimi Tenmangu: Where Japan's Tenmangu Tradition Began

Scattered across Japan are roughly 12,000 Tenmangu shrines, all dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane — the 9th-century scholar, poet and statesman deified as the god of learning. But only one was built while he was still alive. That's Ikimi Tenmangu, established in 956 CE.

The story begins with Takebe Genzo, a close associate of Michizane who lived in Sonobe. When Michizane was exiled to faraway Dazaifu in Kyushu, Genzo secretly took in his children. Desperate for his friend's safe return, Genzo carved a wooden statue of Michizane with his own hands, built a small shrine, and began praying — giving birth to Japan's very first Tenmangu. Remarkably, the current chief priest, Masahide Takebe, is Genzo's 38th-generation direct descendant.

The shrine grounds hold 15 sub-shrines, each with its own story. The Daijingu Shrine enshrines both the Inner and Outer Shrines of Ise Jingu — pray here facing the direction of Ise, and tradition holds it counts as a pilgrimage to Japan's most sacred Shinto site. The Itsukushima Shrine here actually predates Ikimi Tenmangu itself, having served as the area's guardian deity long before Michizane was ever enshrined.

Ishikawarou: An Edo-Era Eatery with Samurai Connections

A fifteen-minute walk through the pastoral landscape leads to Ishikawarou, a restaurant that has been feeding travellers since the Edo period (1603–1865). The wooden building juts out over the river like a traditional kawadoko terrace. A humble hand-painted sign outside notes that 19th-century statesman and samurai Kogoro Katsura — a key figure in the Meiji Restoration — is believed to have once hidden nearby.

Step inside and you'll find a space that's defiantly immaculate for something over 150 years old. Tables gleam, floors shine, and even the beer bottles in the fridge are arranged with military precision — the kind of meticulous care that only a multi-generational family business can sustain. The current fifth-generation proprietor trained at a prestigious Kyoto ryotei before returning home, and his son, now a chef, plans to continue the legacy. A meal here is more than sustenance — it's a warm embrace from Kyoto's deep countryside, served with a side of history.
