Green Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary was originally part of a national forest reserve under the Kingdom of Thailand. In 1974, under the supervision of the Wildlife Management Division, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand established it as an independent zoo functioning as a wildlife sanctuary.

Khao Kheow Open Zoo is located between Bangkok and Pattaya, covering areas of highland evergreen forests, mixed deciduous forests, and vast grasslands. It nurtures a rich variety of wildlife. The zoo is specially planned over an area of approximately 2.5 million square metres, housing over 8,000 species of animals.

You can have close encounters with wildlife in a safe, open environment amidst dense forests and waterfall areas that are free from artificial modifications. There are also small animal feeding sessions and three daily 'Journey to the Jungle' animal shows, along with various other activities that bring you close to nature. Take a tram ride to explore the entire park, which offers stunning scenery by the lake and mountains, blending nature and ecology with a new concept of leisure travel.

The Malayan Tapir is a protected species that has become extinct in the wild. The zoo not only houses them but also carries out research work. There are currently 50 Malayan tapirs in the zoo, each valued at one million Thai Baht.

Meerkats are a type of mongoose found in the African savannah. Remember them from The Lion King? They are mainly distributed near the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. Like other mongooses, meerkats are highly agile hunters. Although they feed mainly on insects, they also consider lizards, small reptiles, and even venomous scorpions as delicacies. The white tiger is a prized animal in the zoo, and its performances are not always available — consider yourself lucky if you get to see one.

Khao Kheow Open Zoo Transport Information

From Bangkok:

1. Take a bus to Chon Buri or Bang Saen, then take a songthaew (shared pickup truck) to the zoo (from Bang Saen to the zoo costs approximately 400–800 baht);

2. Take the BTS to Ekkamai Station — the Eastern Bus Terminal is just outside the station. Tell the bus terminal staff you want to go to Rayong (146 baht). However, according to netizens' experience, the drop‑off point is desolate with only one shop, making it difficult to find transport. A 5km ride to the zoo costs 500 baht;

3. On the return trip, there are no songthaews or taxis available. You can only ask the ticket office staff to arrange a ride with an off‑duty employee, who will take you to Bang Phra for about 500 baht. The journey is longer, around 20 minutes, and the ticket price back to the Eastern Bus Terminal is 88–100 baht.
