The Magnificent West Lake

West Lake is one of China's first nationally key scenic areas and a World Cultural Heritage Site. Covering a water area of approximately 6.38 square kilometres and surrounded by hills on three sides, it is renowned for "one mountain, two causeways, three islets and ten scenic views", featuring classic sights such as Dawn on Su Causeway in Spring and Melting Snow on Broken Bridge. The Bai Causeway and Su Causeway divide the water surface, while Leifeng Pagoda and Baochu Pagoda stand facing each other across the lake.

The scenery varies with the four seasons: misty willows and painted bridges in spring, lotus flowers swaying in the summer breeze at Quyuan Fenghc (Windswept Lotus at Crooked Courtyard), osmanthus rain scattering over Manjuelong in autumn, and snow‑dusted scenes at the lake centre in winter. Poets including Bai Juyi and Su Shi have left behind over a thousand poems about the lake across the ages, and Lin Bu's tale of "plum wife and crane children" adds a touch of recluse allure. As a paradigm of Jiangnan gardens and urban lakes, West Lake showcases the perfect fusion of natural landscapes and cultural heritage, earning it the reputation of "Paradise on Earth".

Leifeng Pagoda

Leifeng Pagoda is situated on the southern shore of West Lake. Originally built in 977 AD during the Northern Song Dynasty by Qian Chu, King of Wuyue, it was initially named Huangfei Pagoda. The old pagoda collapsed in 1924 and was rebuilt in 2002 as a 71‑metre‑high bronze pagoda modelled after Tang and Song dynasty styles. It is the first coloured bronze‑carved pagoda, integrating a steel truss structure with traditional craftsmanship while preserving the original pagoda ruins. Famous for the legend of "The Legend of the White Snake", it is the centrepiece of "Leifeng Pagoda in Evening Glow", one of the Ten Scenic Views of West Lake, and a cultural landmark of Hangzhou.

Lingyin Temple

Lingyin Temple, also known as Yunlin Temple, is located northwest of West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. It was first established in the first year of the Xianhe era of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (326 AD) by the Western Indian monk Huili, and was originally named Lingyin. During the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Kangxi bestowed the name "Yunlin Chan Temple". As one of the ten great ancient temples of Chinese Zen Buddhism, the temple features structures such as the Hall of Heavenly Kings and the Grand Hall of the Great Sage arranged along the central axis. Existing cultural relics include stone pagodas and sutra pillars, covering an area of approximately 87,000 square metres. It is a cultural landmark of West Lake and a sacred Buddhist site.

Chenghuang Pavilion

Chenghuang Pavilion stands atop Wushan Hill, offering a 360‑degree panoramic view of Hangzhou: West Lake glistening to the west, the bustling city to the north, the Qiantang River tide to the east, and rolling hills to the south. The viewpoint is more expansive than that of Baoshi Hill and is praised as a "three‑dimensional presentation of Jiangnan landscape paintings". The fourth‑floor observation deck, in particular, is a classic spot for photography enthusiasts to capture the beauty of Hangzhou's "river, mountains, lake and city". When night falls and the lights come on, the pavilion shines in golden splendour, complementing the West Lake night views. It has been selected as one of the "Top Ten Hangzhou Night Views".

Xixi National Wetland Park

Xixi Wetland is located in the western part of Hangzhou, covering a total area of 11.7 square kilometres. It is China's first national wetland park that integrates urban, agricultural and cultural wetlands.

Famed for its "winding streams veiled in mist", it is known together with West Lake and Xiling as the "Three Xis of Hangzhou". The park features three causeways and ten scenic views, including Green Causeway and Hezhu Street. In 2012, it was rated a National AAAAA Tourist Attraction and serves as a model of wetland ecology and Jiangnan water town culture.

Hangzhou Songcheng Park

Hangzhou Songcheng Park, located southwest of the West Lake Scenic Area and completed in 1994, is China's first Song Dynasty culture‑themed park. Based on the painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival", the park recreates the urban landscape of the Song Dynasty, complete with intricate bracket arches and bustling market scenes. Centred on the grand song‑and‑dance performance "Songcheng Eternal Love", it also features live‑action shows such as "Earthquake" and traditional experience activities. With an annual visitor count exceeding ten million, it is hailed as one of the "Three Famous Shows in the World". In 2000, it was rated a National AAAA Scenic Area and serves as a signature cultural tourism destination of Hangzhou.

▲ Panoramic map of Songcheng: Punk Street, Songcheng Gate, Sky Tree, Time Tree, Love Tree, Cloud Ladder Walk, Performance Plaza and more — every step reveals a new scene, taking you on a journey through time; revel to your heart's content at the Forest Theatre and resonate with the wind at the Cliff Theatre. Drifting along the Song River, you feel as if you are travelling through a painting, experiencing the rich charm of Jiangnan.

Vendors dressed in Song Dynasty attire run traditional workshops such as blacksmith forges, oil‑pressing mills, breweries, Doctor Zhao's medical clinic and boat‑building yards. These workshops also offer hands‑on experiences of intangible cultural heritage, including shadow puppetry, blacksmithing, oil pressing, rice cake making, movable‑type printing and paper cutting.

Hangzhou Museum

Located south of the World Cultural Heritage site West Lake and adjacent to the Hefang Street historical and cultural district, Hangzhou Museum is a comprehensive humanities museum showcasing the historical evolution and cultural treasures of Hangzhou. Its collection comprises over ten thousand artefacts, covering ceramics, calligraphy and paintings, jade, seals, coins, stamps and more.

The South Hall of the museum houses a permanent exhibition on the general history of Hangzhou, themed "Most Memorable is Hangzhou", presenting a narrative exhibition that systematically showcases the city's historical development, cultural heritage and humanistic spirit.  The North Hall focuses on the museum's collected artefacts under the theme "Treasuring Hangzhou", featuring thematic displays of exquisite artefacts unearthed in Hangzhou over the years, immovable cultural relics of Hangzhou, fine calligraphy and paintings from the collection, and treasured scholar's studio items.

Beijing‑Hangzhou Grand Canal

The Beijing‑Hangzhou Grand Canal (Hangzhou section) bears witness to a thousand years of grain shipping culture and has been inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Here, you will find both quaint historic districts and modern artistic leisure spots, making it an ideal place to slow down and experience the blend of history and the present. Whether you are a culture enthusiast, a photography lover or a family with children, you can find your own poetic moments here!

Wulin Night Market

Located in the bustling Wulin business district and adjacent to West Lake, Wulin Night Market stretches approximately 300 metres and is one of the most vibrant and lively night markets in Hangzhou. It gathers exquisite handmade creative products and intangible cultural heritage, offers a one‑stop culinary journey through cuisines from various regions, and features live streaming by internet influencers. It has become a trendy, fashionable gathering place in Hangzhou and a popular check‑in spot for both locals and tourists.
