Thousands of painted lanterns hang high in the night sky, their lights swaying in the breeze, set against the steam of delicious food and the laughter of the crowd. Walking through it feels just like strolling the alleys of Shilin Night Market – full of atmosphere and ceremony.

This year brings together Taiwan's most popular street foods, and every stall is a blast from the past. There's the fragrant "Lu Luo Han", savoury and addictive with every chew; the "grilled soup dumplings" with thin skins and tender filling, crispy golden on the bottom and bursting with juice when you bite in; and the legendary Shilin Night Market classic "Da'erzi Pai" – crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, sweet without being cloying.
