Itinerary Introduction
Kanto's hidden autumn foliage gems are not just limited to the suburbs! Departing easily from Ginza, explore the classic autumn foliage route of Shiobara in Tochigi Prefecture, featuring a high‑altitude ropeway with maple views, a stunning valley suspension bridge and a thousand‑year‑old hot spring experience. Escape the city crowds and immerse yourself in the rich, layered autumn colours of Kanto — mountains, valleys and hot springs all in one day for a perfect autumn getaway.

The first stop is Hunter Mountain, Tochigi's representative highland autumn foliage spot. The seasonal autumn leaf ropeway slowly ascends, reaching the summit observation deck at an altitude of 1,600 metres in about 10 minutes. Overlooking the entire valley from above, red, orange and golden maple leaves blanket the mountains in rich, dramatic layers. On clear days, you can see the distant Nasu mountain range and the Kanto Plain. The summit walking trails are perfect for a leisurely stroll while immersing yourself in the fresh mountain air. The best foliage period is from mid‑October to early November.

Next, visit the Momijidani Grand Suspension Bridge, a must‑see for autumn foliage in Shiobara. This 320‑metre pier‑less pedestrian suspension bridge is one of Japan's longest of its kind, spanning the crystal‑clear waters of the Shiobara Dam reservoir. As you walk across, clear streams flow beneath your feet while layers of crimson maples stretch before your eyes. The valley, lake and autumn leaves blend perfectly together, creating stunning photo opportunities at every turn. The best viewing time is from late October to mid‑November.

Towards the end of the trip, step into the 1,200‑year‑old Shiobara Onsen town to round off your autumn healing experience. Visit "Tsubu no Sato", Japan's largest promenade‑style foot bath. The 60‑metre foot bath path winds through the forest, allowing you to soak in the warm spring water to wash away travel fatigue while admiring the red and golden autumn scenery of more than 20 species of trees — a true taste of the unique charm of one of Kanto's finest autumn foliage hot spring resorts.

One day condenses the best of Tochigi's autumn — from stunning high‑altitude views to valley scenery and relaxing hot springs. Enjoy a one‑stop Kanto autumn experience and easily unlock a different side of Tokyo's suburban autumn foliage trips.
