First stop: Shorinzan Daruma Temple, an ancient Zen temple filled with auspicious meaning. The temple is famous for its colourful Daruma dolls, symbolising perseverance and the fulfilment of wishes, making it one of Japan's most renowned prayer sites. Every New Year, countless visitors come to pay their respects, praying for academic success and career prosperity, drawing energy and hope for life in the tranquil atmosphere of this historic temple.

Next, visit Mizusawa Kannon Temple, with its 1,300‑year history. Its official name is Gotokusan Mizusawa Temple, and it enshrines the Eleven‑Faced Kannon Bodhisattva. The principal hidden Buddha is only unveiled once every 33 years, adding to its sacred and mysterious aura. After paying your respects, be sure to try Mizusawa Udon, one of Japan's Three Great Udon Noodles. The hand‑pounded noodles are delightfully chewy, served with a rich yet simple dipping sauce – a true taste of local tradition.

Then take a stroll along Ikaho Onsen Stone Steps. The 365 stone steps symbolise peace and good fortune all year round, connecting a century‑old street steeped in hot spring culture. Climb to the top to reach Ikaho Shrine, an ancient shrine dedicated to the gods of hot springs and medicine, and a sacred site for prayers of health, good relationships, and safety. From the shrine's open vantage point, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Ikaho Onsen town.

Towards the end of the journey, head to Kajika Bridge, nestled among the mountains. This vermilion arched wooden bridge spans a crystal‑clear stream, offering stunning scenery. In summer, the red bridge contrasts beautifully with the lush green forest, fresh and soothing; from late October to mid‑November, the autumn foliage season, the bridge is surrounded by mountains of fiery red maple leaves, with layered shades of red and orange creating a romantic and serene landscape – a classic hidden gem for autumn leaf viewing in Ikaho.
