Chillon Castle Ticket

 Located on the shores of Lake Geneva in the town of Veytaux, near Montreux in the canton of Vaud, Chillon Castle is the most renowned medieval water castle in Europe. Perched atop a massive lakeside rock, it appears to float upon the azure waters from afar, with the vast Alps as its backdrop, creating a picturesque landscape.

The castle's history dates back to as early as the 11th century, with clear documentation from 1150. From the 12th century onwards, it came under the House of Savoy, undergoing expansions over several generations, transforming from a military fortress into a noble summer palace that balanced defence and leisure. It controlled the Lake Geneva shipping route and the land passage through the Saint Bernard Pass, becoming a key toll collection point for trade. In 1536, Bern captured the site, and it later came under the canton of Vaud, serving as an arsenal and a prison.

During the 16th‑century Reformation, the story of Count Bonivard being imprisoned here was immortalised by Lord Byron in his poem 'The Prisoner of Chillon', which brought the castle great fame in the Romantic era and attracted literary figures such as Rousseau, Hugo, and Dumas to visit and seek inspiration.

Today, the castle comprises 25 buildings, three courtyards, and double concentric defensive walls. In the underground dungeons, the pillar bearing Byron's signature still stands. The 14th‑century murals and stained‑glass windows in the Duke's bedchamber remain well‑preserved. Climbing the watchtower offers a panoramic view of the blue of Lake Geneva, the snow of the Alps, and the lakeside countryside. Visitors can delve into the history through audio guides or mobile apps, while seasonal concerts and medieval‑themed events add to the charm. As one of the most visited historic buildings in Switzerland, Chillon Castle is not merely a stone‑built chronicle of history, but an eternal classic where natural beauty and human culture intertwine.
