Lake Biwa is an ancient lake, home to over 2,000 species of organisms, including endemic species not found elsewhere. The Lake Biwa Museum showcases the formation and history of the lake, animals that once lived in the area, the history of people around the lake, and the connection between modern people and the lake. In addition to three exhibition halls covering geological history, human history, and nature closely related to our daily lives, the museum also houses one of Japan's largest freshwater aquariums, spanning approximately 2,000 square metres. In particular, the large tunnel tank makes visitors feel as if they are at the bottom of the lake. The museum also features an "Explore & Discover" room equipped with microscopes, providing opportunities to observe and touch numerous biological, geological, and cultural specimens.

The highlight of the museum – the half‑flesh, half‑bone Zdensky elephant – is a must‑see!
