Introduction to Jeju Seogwipo Submarine

Did you know there's weather in the sea too, just like on land?

Just as thick fog can hide the beautiful scenery on land, when underwater visibility is poor, the sea hides its beautiful underwater ecosystem like a treasure, refusing to show us.

Will Jeju's sea bring us the luck to find treasure today? Let's set off on this journey together!

雾天.png

There are 4 factors that change underwater weather!

First. Suspended particles in the water such as soil and organic matter

Second. Phytoplankton that makes water look green or blue‑green

Third. The angle and intensity of sunlight or artificial lighting in the water

Fourth. Light transmittance decreasing with water depth

Submarine Sightseeing

The JIAH submarine we're boarding today is the world's first digital submarine. It can carry up to 67 passengers and measures 22 metres long, 4.6 metres wide, and 5.7 metres high.

As it runs on battery power, it causes no harm to the natural sea environment, allowing you to safely experience the submarine ride.

Jeju Submarine Depth

40m Below Sea Level

Riding the JIAH

40 metres below sea level: roughly the height of a 14‑storey building on land. Can you imagine that?

At a pressure of 5 atmospheres, only specially trained professional divers can go there.

Riding the JIAH: you can safely explore the deep seabed!

Be sure to check the digital depth gauge that shows the water depth!

潜水艇5.jpg

When you reach 40m below sea level, as the mist clears and underwater weather turns clear, you may be lucky enough to spot the shining treasure ship up close in the waters near Mosul Island.

The Seogwipo submarine has created artificial reefs and habitats for marine life by removing harmful substances from fishing boats, providing breeding grounds and shelters for sea creatures near the coast.

The wrecked ship, now known as the treasure ship, has become home to various marine friends including fish, shellfish, and corals. Fish populations have actually increased by 300%.

If you find the treasure ship,

don't forget to snap a lucky keepsake photo!

Seogwipo Submarine Visitor Guide

1. Before Departure (Arrive 30 Minutes Early)

Arrive at the Seogwipo Submarine Pier at least half an hour before your booked time slot. Remember to bring your passport and fill in the boarding information on site. The indoor waiting area has ample seating with air‑conditioning in summer, ensuring a comfortable wait.

2. Transfer Boat to the Open Sea

At your scheduled time, follow the staff to the pier and take a ferry to the deep‑sea submarine mooring point. The boat ride takes around ten‑odd minutes, during which you can enjoy the coastal mountains and sea views of Seogwipo along the way.

3. Free Family Photo Before Boarding

Before transferring to the submarine, each family gets two photo sessions: one is a complimentary souvenir photo that you can collect after the trip; the other is a paid professionally edited photo — you can purchase it if you like the photos, no pressure to buy.

4. Board the Jiah Submarine for Deep‑Sea Sightseeing

Enter the submarine cabin via the ladder, and the staff will arrange for everyone to sit by individual portholes. Above each viewing window, there is a real‑time screen broadcasting the submarine's descent, ascent, and diver interactions throughout the journey.

The submarine descends in layered stages, pausing every ten‑odd metres for viewing, with a real‑time pressure display next to the portholes so you can directly experience the deep‑sea changes; K‑pop music plays throughout the trip for a relaxed and enjoyable sightseeing experience.

5. Ascend and Return, Approximately One Hour in Total

After the sightseeing, the submarine ascends quickly, and you take the ferry back to the shore pier. The entire round trip takes nearly an hour, guided by professional crew throughout, ensuring a safe journey.

Seogwipo Submarine Safe Travel Tips

Official Safety Standards

After a single Seogwipo submarine experience: wait at least 12 hours before flying

If you're taking a flight back to Hong Kong the same night after the submarine ride and the interval is less than 12 hours, it's absolutely not recommended as there are health risks.

For repeated dives on the same day or diving activities on two consecutive days: it's recommended to wait at least 18 hours before flying

Conservative Safety Advice

Don't schedule the submarine on the last day of your trip — allow a 24‑hour buffer to fully flush out nitrogen from your body and completely avoid the risk of decompression sickness.

Additional restriction: within 12 hours after the submarine ride, avoid hiking or driving up mountains, as pressure changes can also trigger discomfort.

Health Restrictions — Not Recommended For:

People with claustrophobia: the submarine is an enclosed space with limited room, which may cause anxiety and breathing difficulties.

Pregnant women, people with heart disease, lung disease, or recent head/cardiovascular surgery are prohibited from boarding.

People prone to severe seasickness: the transfer boat ride lasts ten‑odd minutes and can be rocky in rough seas; take seasickness medication in advance.

People with severe colds, nasal congestion, or ear infections: deep‑dive pressure can irritate the eardrums, causing severe pain and hearing discomfort.

Seogwipo Submarine Important Notes

Weather Impact

Submarine sightseeing is highly dependent on sea weather conditions. In case of strong winds, heavy rain, typhoons or other severe weather, operations will be suspended immediately. Check the real‑time weather forecast before departure; light rain usually means normal operation continues.

Comfort & Suitable Participants

The submarine interior is an enclosed space that is relatively cramped; friends with claustrophobia are not recommended to take part;

The activity has a gentle pace with no violent rocking, suitable for secondary school students, children, and the elderly alike. No water sports experience is needed — even first‑timers to underwater sightseeing will find it easy to enjoy.

Other Details to Note

Peak season brings huge crowds, so be sure to book your time slot in advance — don't try your luck with a walk‑in on the day;

Your passport must be shown at boarding; without identification, you cannot board the submarine;

There is no Chinese commentary inside the submarine, so check guides online beforehand to learn about the underwater attractions;
