Stockholm
Stockholm is the capital of Sweden, situated on 14 islands and peninsulas, known as the "Venice of the North". The Old Town (Gamla Stan) is one of the best-preserved medieval districts in Europe, with cobblestone streets and colourful houses interwoven, where you can visit the Royal Palace (with the daily changing of the guard at noon), the Cathedral, and the Nobel Museum. The iconic City Hall is the venue for the Nobel Banquet, with its red brick tower and dazzling Golden Hall. The Vasa Museum houses a fully salvaged 17th-century warship and is the most visited museum in the Nordic region. Also check out the world's longest art metro line, Skansen Open-Air Museum, and the ABBA Museum. Must-try foods include Swedish meatballs (served with lingonberry jam and mashed potatoes), cured salmon, Skagen toast with shrimp paste, and cinnamon buns; recommended desserts include Princess Cake and Semla cream buns, with fresh Baltic seafood offering excellent flavours.
