Taichung City
Taichung City, commonly known as Taichung, is the second largest city in Taiwan and the core city of the second largest metropolitan area in Taiwan, the 'Taichung Metropolitan Area'. It is often grouped with Changhua County and Nantou County as the 'Changhua-Nantou-Taichung Region'. The name 'Taichung' means 'Central Taiwan'. As the city is planted with willow trees, it is quiet and beautiful, and was known as 'Kyoto of Taiwan' in Japanese propaganda films during the Japanese colonial period. The Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage is the premier folk culture event in Taichung, a representative work of intangible cultural assets, and has been designated as a folk custom category of 'Taiwan Cultural Assets'. In addition, there are large-scale folk or cultural events such as the Hanxi Mazu Pilgrimage through Eighteen Villages, the Xinshe Sea of Flowers Festival, the Taichung Jazz Festival, the Houli Two Horse Tourism Season, the Central Taiwan Lantern Festival, and the Taichung International Pastry Festival.
