Maizuru is an important military port and ancient city along the coast of the Sea of Japan, boasting the reputation of "Kyoto by the Sea". Maizuru Natural and Cultural Park features Japan's second largest hydrangea garden (100,000 plants) and a camellia garden. The 7-kilometre-long Cherry Blossom Corridor along the Yoro River is a top cherry blossom viewing spot in Kansai. Historical attractions include Maizuru Park (the site of Tanabe Castle) and the Repatriation Memorial Park. As one of the birthplaces of nikujaga (Japanese-style meat and potato stew), local seafood (rock oysters, white shrimp) and Maizuru curry are highly flavourful.
