

Kyoto City
Kyoto City (Japanese: 京都市, Japanese pronunciation: [kʲoːto]) is a city located in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It serves as the capital of Kyoto Prefecture and is one of the government-designated major cities. Kyoto is one of the most important cultural and educational cities in Japan, with 37 universities within the city. The average number of universities per million people and the proportion of students in the population rank first among major Japanese cities. Kyoto is an ancient capital representing Japanese culture. To preserve the ancient cityscape, Kyoto has the strictest landscape regulation laws in Japan. The city gathers a variety of architectural styles. Among the ancient buildings, the most representative are the 14 sites selected as World Cultural Heritage, of which all except Nijō Castle are temples or shrines, demonstrating the extremely important role of religious architecture in Kyoto's architectural art. Tō-ji Temple and Kiyomizu-dera Temple are well-known viewing spots within Kyoto.
