Major Exhibitions and Visual Arts

Exhibition spaces across the city are programming large-scale shows spanning international modern art, regional history, and ancient treasures. From Dec 11, 2026 to April 4, 2027, the National Gallery Singapore partners with New York’s Guggenheim Museum to present an exhibition on pop art. The showcase features pioneering figures such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Yayoi Kusama. This follows the gallery's impressionism exhibition in partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which runs until March 1.

Between these international exhibitions, programming shifts to regional narratives with art responding to World War II and the Vietnam War. Running from May 22 to Oct 18, 2026, the exhibition titled After The Monsoon: Art & War In Southeast Asia includes works by artists such as Robert Zhao, Sim Chiyin, Affandi, and Tuan Andrew Nguyen.

In the second half of 2026, the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) will host Buddhist art treasures from the Unesco World Heritage Site of the Dunhuang Mogao Caves. This marks the first major exhibition in South-east Asia dedicated to Dunhuang, featuring full-scale reproductions of grottoes alongside immersive digital experiences.

Festivals and Performing Arts Leadership

The Singapore International Festival of Arts (Sifa) runs from May 15 to 30, 2026, marking the debut of theatremaker Chong Tze Chien as festival director. Chong takes over the role from Natalie Hennedige. The 2026 edition sees the return of the Festival Village, echoing formats from the 1990s and early 2000s with indoor and outdoor performances, interactive and site-specific works, a parade, and late-night experiences. The complete theme and programme details are scheduled for announcement in the first quarter of 2026.

In the musical sphere, Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu assumes the position of music director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) from July 2026, succeeding Austrian conductor Hans Graf. Before taking over formally, Lintu conducts a Dmitri Shostakovich concert with the SSO on April 9 and 10, following previous programmes featuring Joseph Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. Lintu is joined by Christopher Cheong, the orchestra’s first Singaporean head of artistic planning.

Theatre Awards Milestone

The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards marks its 25th edition in 2026. Established in 2001 to recognise excellence in Singapore theatre annually, the awards ceremony continues to track top local productions following prior winners such as Wild Rice’s G*d Is A Woman.
