Travelling to Seoul this June offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in traditional Korean craftsmanship without spending a single won. The Korea Heritage Service Foundation has launched "Gongdeurim" (Gong-DREAM), an exclusive series of free, hands-on cultural workshops hosted at the National Intangible Heritage Center in Gangnam District, southern Seoul. Running from 12 to 30 June, these interactive sessions allow visitors and local residents to create bespoke, handmade traditional crafts alongside certified masters of Korea's National Intangible Cultural Heritage and their top apprentices.

Whether you are an avid cultural enthusiast or looking to enrich your Seoul itinerary with unique artisanal experiences, this public programme bridges the gap between ancient Korean techniques and contemporary lifestyle decor. Beyond the craft series, the foundation is also organising interactive educational performance tours aimed at inspiring local youth through traditional performing arts.

Gong-DREAM Hands-On Artisan Workshops

The highlight for cultural travellers is the Gong-DREAM workshop series, which takes place every Friday and Saturday from 12 to 27 June. Designed to connect a special on-site gallery exhibition directly with practical art-making, the ten specialized sessions give participants direct guidance from traditional master craftsmen.

Participants can explore three distinctive Korean artisanal practices:

* Traditional Metal Engraving: Guided by master metal engraver Nam Kyung-suk, participants learn intricate metalwork skills to construct elegant framed constellation maps.

* Ox Horn Inlay (Hwagak): Artist Lee Jong-min teaches the meticulous art of working with dyed ox horn, guiding workshop attendees in crafting luminous suncatchers.

* Traditional Needlework (Nubi & Chasu): Shin Myeong-ok, a student of traditional needlework, leads delicate hands-on sessions where attendees design and sew miniature traditional keyrings.

Each session provides all necessary raw materials free of charge, allowing attendees to craft high-quality souvenirs to take home.

Student Performance Tours in Gangnam

In addition to the public craft workshops, the institute has partnered with the Seoul Gangnam Seocho District Office of Education to present the "Gonggam Tour" on 23, 24, and 30 June. Designed to bring heritage education directly into local schools across the Gangnam area, this initiative features live demonstrations and immersive interactions centered around classic Korean performing arts.

The performance tours showcase three major regional intangible assets:

* Bongsan Mask Dance: A lively, satirical dramatic performance traditionally performed during seasonal celebrations.

* Gangryeong Mask Dance: An energetic regional variant featuring expressive wooden masks and dynamic folk choreography.

* Crane and Lotus Dance: A graceful court dance symbolizing purity and peace through elegant movements.
