Mika Ninagawa's "Alive with Shadows" Comes to Paris's Grand Palais

The Grand Palais invites Japanese visual artist Mika Ninagawa and her creative collective EiM for a first-in-Europe exhibition titled "Alive with Shadows". From 16 December 2026 to 21 March 2027, step into the pop and poetic universe of this major figure of Japanese visual arts.

Ninagawa's world — at the crossroads of contemporary imagination and Japanese aesthetic memory — fascinates many. This autumn and winter, the Grand Palais in Paris devotes an exhibition to her, billed as "a first in Europe". Born in Tokyo in 1972, Ninagawa teams up for the occasion with her creative collective EiM.

Known for pop and poetic works blending photography, cinema, video and installation, Mika Ninagawa has shown at major international institutions, with images capturing nature amid urban bustle or in human-shaped spaces. But her work goes far beyond the still image.

With the help of her creative collective EiM (Eternity in a Moment), the Japanese artist creates lush environments, nourished in particular by theatre — a discipline she discovered as a child through her father, stage director Yukio Ninagawa. Through almost unreal installations, Ninagawa invites visitors into a sensory, immersive experience of saturated, contrasted colours.

For this Grand Palais exhibition, titled "Alive with Shadows", Mika Ninagawa will present photographs, videos and installations. Presented in galleries 9.2 and 10.2 of the Grand Palais, tickets go on sale from 6 October 2026 on the museum's website.
