Zen gardens, also known as karesansui (枯山水, "dry landscape"), are a little different from ordinary Japanese gardens. While Japanese gardens are typically centered around a pond with natural elements like streams, islands, and hills, zen gardens use gravel, sand, moss, and shrubs — with no water at all.

These "dry gardens" peaked during the Muromachi period (1393–1465), about 600 years ago. Visiting one feels like travelling back in time to a temple in the Muromachi era — you might even become a zen master! Here are the 8 best zen gardens in Kyoto.

1. Ryoanji Temple (龍安寺)

UNESCO registered Ryoan-ji as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1994. The garden is said to have been built in 1499, though its exact origins remain a mystery. In 1975, Queen Elizabeth II visited and gave it a rave review, making it famous worldwide. Ryoan-ji has both a zen garden and a traditional Japanese garden with seasonal flowers, and the contrast between the two draws many visitors.

Hours: Mar–Nov 8:00–17:00; Dec–Feb 8:30–16:30. Admission: 500 yen (adults), 300 yen (under 15).

2. Tofukuji Temple (東福寺)

Founded in 1236, Tofukuji is one of Kyoto's oldest temples. Its gardens were designed in 1939 by legendary landscape architect Mirei Shigemori, who blended Zen aesthetics with modern art. Each garden has its own character, letting you enjoy different styles of zen gardens.

Hours: Apr–Oct 9:00–16:30; Nov–Dec 8:30–16:30; early Dec–Mar 9:00–16:00. Fees: 600 yen (Tsutenkyo Bridge & Kaisando), 500 yen (Hojo & gardens), 1,000 yen (all).

3. Kenninji Temple (建仁寺)

The concept of this garden is the scenery of Mt. Hyakujo in China. Kenninji has three gardens: Chou-on-tei, Dai-ou-en, and the Circle-Triangle-Square garden. Chou-on-tei can be enjoyed from all four sides; Dai-ou-en was built in 1940 by famous landscape architect Kumakichi Kato; and the Circle-Triangle-Square garden represents three elements of nature — circle for water, square for ground, and triangle for fire.

Hours: 10:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). Admission: 600 yen (18+), 300 yen (13–17), 300 yen (6–12), free (under 5).

4. Enkoji Temple (圓光寺)

Famous for its autumn colors, usually best in late November, Enkoji has a beautiful courtyard garden with a pond and many maple trees — green in summer, stunning in autumn. Its zen garden, "Honryutei," was built in 2013. The swirl of white pebbles represents a sea of clouds; some stones depict lightning while others form a dragon rising into the sky. The garden is small but dramatic — and still "unfinished," with the message that it will be completed in our hearts.

Hours: 9:00–17:00. Admission: 500 yen (adults), 400 yen (13–17), 300 yen (6–12).

5. Manshuin Monzeki Temple (曼殊院門跡)

Founded by Dengyo Daishi in the 8th century, Manshuin is notable for its buildings and fine garden, designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty. In this karesansui dry garden, the pebbles represent a flowing stream with two small islands — "Tsurujima" and "Kamejima" — while the building itself represents a small boat. A 400-year-old pine on Tsurujima portrays a crane, next to a Manshuin-style Christian lantern.

6. Konchiin Temple (金地院)

Konchiin has three main gardens — two zen gardens (Hojo teien and Kohojo teien) and one Japanese garden (Rokudo-tei). Hojo teien is said to have been built by Enshu Kobori and is one of the most famous early Edo-period gardens, around 400 years old. Kohojo teien was built in 1966.

Hours: Mar–Nov 9:00–17:00; Dec–Feb until 16:30.

7. Daitokuji Temple – Zuihoin (大徳寺・瑞峰院)

Daitokuji is said to have been built in 1535 during the Muromachi era, making it one of Kyoto's oldest gardens. Founded by the daimyo Otomo, one of Japan's early Christians, the gardens designed by Shigemori Mirei in 1961 include a Garden of the Cross and even a statue of the Virgin Mary. At under 100㎡, it's on the smaller side, but the architect's technique makes it feel profound and deep.

Hours: 9:00–17:00. Admission: 400 yen (adults), 300 yen (children).

8. Taizoin Temple (退蔵院)

Taizoin has two main gardens: Hojo teien and Yoko-en. Hojo teien definitely existed by 1602, though its earlier history is unknown; Yoko-en was built in 1963–1965 by garden architect Kinsaku Nakane. With many plants and trees, you can enjoy seasonal flowers and scenery.

Hours: 9:00 (last entry 17:00). Admission: 600 yen (15+), 300 yen (under 15), free (under 6).
