Q Station Manly’s Harbour Heat: Sydney’s Dreamy New Wood-Fired Sauna on the Harbour

Sauna views don’t get much better than this…

A few weeks back I changed into my swimmers at golden hour and slipped into a sauna perched right on Sydney Harbour. Within moments, the warmth combined with the calm, glittering water had my mind and body sinking into something close to meditation. Afterwards we took a cold plunge in the moon-shaped Spring Cove nearby, channelling Wim Hof to stay zen in the icy sea (it half worked). We came out clear-headed and buzzing – and slept a full eight hours that night.

Harbour Heat is a newly built wood-fired sauna, custom-made in New Zealand – and its knockout ocean views aren’t the only thing that sets it apart. It sits on a private wharf at Q Station Manly, a former quarantine station that’s now a heritage accommodation and cultural retreat inside Sydney Harbour National Park. The site carries deep significance for First Nations peoples, who hold longstanding cultural ties to North Head and Sydney Harbour.

Powered by a traditional wood-burning stove, Harbour Heat delivers a softer, more natural warmth. During each session water is ladled over the hot stones to create löyly – the Finnish word for the gentle steam that makes the whole thing both calming and restorative.

Does Harbour Heat have Sydney’s best views? Quite possibly. I’ve sampled a handful of saunas over the years, and Harbour Heat beats the gym ones any day of the week. (Sorry, gyms.)

The best part? You can do what I did and dive straight into the ocean before or after – the ultimate all-natural cold plunge.

Sessions run Wednesday to Sunday from sunrise to sunset, with 50-minute slots priced from $25 to $30, plus free shuttle buses from Manly to get you there. You can join a communal session of up to 12 guests or book the sauna exclusively for your own group.

There’s also a café and restaurant nearby for a post-sauna bite and drink – just bring your own towel and togs.

Fancy making a weekend of it? You can stay overnight at the heritage-listed Q Station. The rooms are simple, but waking to sweeping harbour views, rugged bush and the sounds of wildlife is pretty special. Book dinner at Boilerhouse Kitchen & Bar and you won’t need to leave all weekend.
