Interview with Minato Sanjiro of YUTONAMI — Experience Kyoto's Everyday Life Through Morning Baths

Introducing how to experience Kyoto's sento is Minato Sanjiro, president of "YUTONAMI-sha." Guided by his belief that "the sento culture must not be allowed to disappear from Japan," he has revived one bathhouse after another from the brink of closure, turning them into beloved and popular baths. Minato not only works to protect historic sento, but also transforms the revived baths into workplaces that young people aspire to join, drawing in a younger generation and turning them into spaces where new culture is born.

Minato Sanjiro was born in 1990 in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. He moved to Kyoto for university, where he founded a sento club and toured roughly 160 baths in Kyoto Prefecture and about 700 across Japan. After working in the fashion industry, he devoted himself to rebuilding Umeyu Sauna (Kyoto). Today, under the name "YUTONAMI-sha," he operates 10 sento, including Genyu (Kyoto), Yokitoh (Shiga), Ninjinyu (Aichi), MIYA-no-Yu (Osaka), Kamogawa-yu (Kyoto), Minatogawa-yu (Hyogo), Ichino-yu (Mie), Shinju Onsen (Osaka) and Ougi Onsen (Osaka).

Experience "Water" and "Space" with All Five Senses

"When it comes to Kyoto's sento, the most important thing is the water." Most sento in Kyoto City draw on groundwater — while there are fine sakes brewed with Kyoto's groundwater and famous drinking waters you can taste, the only place you can feel the quality of that water with your whole body is the sento. Some sento use groundwater not only for their cold-water pools but even for their steam saunas, offering the luxurious experience of soaking your entire body in Kyoto's natural water.

The architecture and design of the baths are also well worth seeing. Tokyo sento are often built in a temple-like "miya-zukuri" style, but Kyoto sento are different — their most distinctive feature is an exterior that resembles an enlarged machiya townhouse. What's more, within these carefully planned spaces, a variety of baths are arranged, so each sento offers its own design ideas and atmosphere to enjoy — that is the special pleasure of Kyoto's sento.

Pricing That Makes Sento-Hopping More Fun

Around Tokyo, most sento charge the entry fee and sauna fee separately, but most sento in Kyoto City charge only the entry fee while still allowing you to enjoy the sauna. Compared to other regions, the overall cost is lower, greatly lowering the barrier to trying sento. With what you save, you can even visit another bath — a "sento-hopping" experience you can enjoy easily in Kyoto.

When it comes to sento etiquette, the most important thing to remember is "don't make the changing area wet." You may bring your own towel into the bathing area, and when you come out, dry off before returning to the changing area. A sento is an important daily space for local residents, so as long as you carry a respectful attitude of "pardon the intrusion into local everyday life," mutual understanding comes naturally.
