Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi: Istanbul's Century-Old Köfte Institution

Restaurants | Turkish | Fatih

While imitators continue to sprout like mushrooms across the city, Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi keeps its popularity and quality intact from its outpost in the eponymous neighbourhood — now run by the fourth-generation descendants of founder Mehmet Seracettin Efendi.

The köfte is just as tasty as ever, and the marble tables and creaky stairs still seem to date back to 1920, the year the shop was founded. Alongside the famous signature köfte — characteristically flat and chewy — the menu features piyaz (white bean and onion salad), lamb skewers, rice, pickled peppers and lentil soup. For dessert, you can't go wrong with a slice of irmik helvası (semolina halva) alongside your post-meal tea or coffee.

Address: Divanyolu Caddesi 12, İstanbul 34122

Opening hours: Daily 10:30–23:00
