Travelling light is about to save you some cash. From February 2027, passengers flying with Qantas-owned budget carrier Jetstar will have to pay to stow a larger carry-on bag in the overhead locker, with charges starting at AUD $25 per flight.

Under the new rules, only one small personal item that fits beneath the seat — think a backpack, handbag or laptop bag — is included in the base fare. If your carry-on is too big to slide under the seat and needs the overhead bin, you will need to add Jetstar's new Priority Carry-on option, which also comes with early boarding and removes the current 7kg cabin baggage weight limit.

According to Jetstar, the change is designed to speed up boarding by cutting down gate-side baggage checks and reducing the scramble for overhead locker space.

The move aligns Jetstar with a growing number of low-cost carriers that charge separately for overhead cabin baggage. The announcement has already sparked pushback online, with some travellers calling it a cash grab and questioning whether yet another travel surcharge is really necessary.

Here is the bottom line: if you fly Jetstar with just a backpack or laptop bag, this policy costs you nothing. But if you are someone who fills the overhead bin to bursting, plan on budgeting an extra $23 per flight starting February 2027 — or consider checking a bag and seeing which option works out cheaper.
