Sydney's Beloved 90-Year-Old Anzac Park Scores a $6 Million Makeover — New Trails, BBQ Zones & Outdoor Gym by 2028

West Ryde's cherished Anzac Park is about to get a serious upgrade, with construction expected to wrap up in 2028.

Sydney has been on a green-space winning streak lately. In the last month alone, plans surfaced for a brand-new national park three times the size of Centennial Parklands, followed by the City of Parramatta unveiling a major expansion of the area's walking and cycling network. Now, the NSW Government has dropped the final design for a $6 million transformation of one of West Ryde's most treasured pockets of green — the 90-year-old Anzac Park. According to the government, the heritage-listed site will gain upgraded walking paths, expanded picnic facilities and a dedicated outdoor fitness zone, all while preserving the ANZAC memorial at its heart.

Shaped by more than 300 community submissions across two rounds of public consultation, the masterplan is designed to ensure the historic park can keep pace with Ryde's rapidly swelling population. The final blueprint includes new walking trails, additional seating and shaded rest areas, improved barbecue facilities, a fresh entrance, a modern accessible amenities block, community gathering spaces and an outdoor fitness area. Planning Minister Paul Scully framed the project as essential infrastructure for a suburb preparing to welcome thousands of new homes in coming years.

Projects like this help existing and future residents have access to the quality green spaces that make neighbourhoods great places to live, Scully said.

The Anzac Park revamp is part of a broader NSW Government push to invest heavily in public green space. Some $520 million has been earmarked for open space and active transport within transport-oriented development precincts, alongside funding streams for new parks, sports fields, swimming spots and town squares right across the state. Construction on the revitalised Anzac Park is pencilled in for completion by 2028.
