Peak summer has arrived, and Tokyo is buzzing with vibrant festivals, traditional Bon Odori dancing, and spectacular fireworks nearly every week. The August 8-9 weekend is especially packed, with some of Tokyo's most iconic Tanabata celebrations and other time-honoured matsuri unfolding across the city. Whether you're after colourful decorations, energetic dance performances, or one of Tokyo's grandest fireworks shows, here's your definitive guide to this weekend's unmissable events.

Asagaya Tanabata Matsuri

August 7-11

For 70 years, Asagaya has hosted its own distinctive take on Tanabata. The festival is famous for its elaborate kusudama ornaments and a kaleidoscopic curtain of wind-swept streamers, though it has certainly kept up with the times. In recent years, the papier-mâché decorations hanging from the Pearl Center shopping arcade's ceiling have featured pop-culture icons including Godzilla, Chiikawa, Buzz Lightyear, and even Donald Trump.

While the decorations are on view all day, the real magic happens at dusk, when the shopping street springs to life with a host of food and drink stalls serving classic Japanese festival fare.

Fussa Tanabata Festival

August 7-9

Head west to Fussa for one of Tokyo's longest-running Tanabata celebrations. Now in its 76th year, this festival goes well beyond the usual low-key affair, packing in a Princess Orihime contest and a folk dance parade featuring mikoshi (portable shrines). The latter returns on Friday from 6pm, setting off from Fussa Station's west exit and concluding in front of Fussa City Hall.

Sunday brings additional stage shows and cheerleading performances. And, naturally, food stalls line the streets around Fussa Station throughout the festival's run.

Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival

August 8

Yukata-clad spectators flood the streets of Harajuku and Aoyama for the mesmerising Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival — widely regarded as one of Tokyo's premier summer events. Now in its 45th year, this edition will launch 10,000 fireworks over the course of one hour from the Meiji Jingu Gaien Rubber-ball Baseball Field.

For the best views, the cluster of sports stadiums south of the launch site offers paid seating at Meiji Jingu Stadium and Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium. Alternatively, simply wander the surrounding neighbourhood to find a free viewing spot. The display runs from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.

In the event of stormy weather, the festival will be postponed to August 9.

Kanda Myojin Noryo Matsuri

August 6-9

Kanda Shrine's Noryo Matsuri spans three days this weekend, offering an all-encompassing summer celebration that includes Bon Odori dancing, classic matsuri street food, and a small beer and sake festival kicking off a day earlier on August 6.

Friday's Bon Odori session (4.30pm-8.30pm) lets you dance to popular anime songs, while the weekend sessions (from 5.30pm) feature Kanda Shrine's original song 'Kanda Myojin Ondo'. The organisers have even uploaded a practice video to YouTube, so be sure to learn the steps before you go. The festival wraps up at 8.30pm each evening.

The event may be cancelled in bad weather. No Bon Odori dancing will be held on August 6.

Shibuya Bon Odori

Get ready for over three hours of spirited dancing right in front of Shibuya 109, as the seventh edition of Shibuya Bon Odori takes over Dogenzaka and Bunkamura-dori on Saturday August 8. Both streets will be pedestrianised from 4.30pm to 10.30pm, creating an electric atmosphere as hundreds of revellers in yukata and traditional attire dance into the night. While details are still emerging, expect a handful of food stalls serving classic matsuri treats to keep you fuelled.

Hachioji Festival

Around 20 floats and portable shrines parade through northern Hachioji during this summer festival — one of the Kanto region's biggest events of its kind, traditionally held on the first weekend of August.

When rival floats cross paths, their musical troupes engage in a raucous face-off known as buttsuke, each band attempting to throw the other off beat — a tradition unique to Hachioji. While the floats and shrines are the main draw on Saturday and Sunday, keep an eye out for ice sculpture displays (Aug 7, 1.30pm-4.10pm), taiko drumming (Aug 8, 3pm-4.30pm), and Taiwanese dance performers from Kaohsiung (Aug 7 & 9, 6pm-6.20pm; Aug 8, 4.30pm-4.50pm). This three-day extravaganza typically draws over 800,000 spectators each year.
