Rock star alert at La Villette! From 22 September 2026 to 25 April 2027, the Musée de la Musique (Cité de la Musique) presents My Rock Stars, a major celebration of forty years of work by Hassan Hajjaj — the Moroccan photographer, designer, graphic artist, and fashion designer renowned for his vibrantly coloured portraits of iconic artists that hybridise cultures and references.
Set to a soundtrack by Acid Arab and staged using the drink crates that feature in his artworks, the exhibition showcases numerous photographs from Rock Stars, his instantly recognisable series defined by its iridescent colour palette. The portraits bring together an extraordinary roster of stars — Rachid Taha, Billie Eilish, Amadou & Mariam, Souad Massi, and Lee Scratch Perry — all shot according to a codified ritual: settings that blend Moroccan references with pop art, vivid colour dyes, and accessories and garments handcrafted by the artist himself.
To trace the origins of this series and Hajjaj's broader practice, the exhibition reaches back to his formative London years — where he opened boutiques, immersed himself in fashion and photography, moved through reggae and hip-hop scenes, while reconnecting with the Gnawa culture of North Africa, steeped in trance and spirituality. A dedicated focus section explores Gnawa artists and instruments, as well as the role of colour — central to the artist's rituals and works.
