The iconic image of thousands of golden lights drifting across a dark body of water usually belongs to Chiang Mai, Thailand. But this September, that magical Asian tradition makes its way to Madrid. On Saturday, September 19, 2026, Parque Juan Carlos I will host the Water Lantern Festival — an enchanting open-air evening blending music, food, and a spectacular mass lantern launch on the water.

A Sunset Ritual of Reflection and Connection
At the heart of the festival is a deeply visual and participatory ritual. Every attendee receives a floating lantern to personalise with drawings, memories, messages of gratitude, or wishes for the future. The lanterns are made from 100% sustainable materials — biodegradable rice paper and wooden bases — illuminated by LED candles instead of open flames. After the event, every lantern and all waste is collected, ensuring the park is left in pristine condition.
Following an afternoon of music and mingling, the centrepiece moment arrives at sunset: all participants release their lanterns onto the water simultaneously. The result is a luminous landscape that invites you to pause, reflect, and soak in the beauty of your surroundings alongside family or friends — a genuine moment of collective connection.

Beyond the visual spectacle, the Water Lantern Festival is designed as a complete experience.
