The Ancient City (Muang Boran) is in Samut Prakan, about 30 kilometres from Bangkok, and is a theme park featuring miniature replicas of Thailand's famous landmarks, as well as the world's largest open‑air museum. Construction of the museum within the park began in 1963 and took over ten years to complete. Covering 200 acres, its layout almost mirrors the shape of Thailand itself. Here, you can find scaled‑down models of the country's most iconic buildings, monuments, and temples, along with a floating market of stilt houses, rural scenes, and market vignettes. On special occasions, performances such as cockfighting, Muay Thai, and traditional dances can also be enjoyed. This place allows you to tour all of Thailand in a single day. Founder Lek Viriyaphant, driven by his passion for Thai history and art, devoted his life to designing this vast land in the shape of Thailand's geography, recreating historically or architecturally significant structures from every region at 70 to 80 percent of their original scale, faithfully rebuilt throughout the park.

Thailand now actually has 77 provinces (changwat), while "72 provinces" is an older designation. The park features a total of 116 attractions open to visitors, arranged geographically according to Thailand's four main regions (South, Central, Northeast, and North), with important historical buildings and carvings from different periods and styles faithfully recreated before our eyes, making you feel as though you are on‑site — indeed, a larger‑than‑life miniature world! Since Buddhism is deeply rooted in Thailand, its history and architecture are inseparable from Buddhist influences, while cultural exchanges with neighbouring countries can also be traced within the structures. Influences from the Khmer Empire, Indian civilisation, and Chinese culture have all been absorbed with an inclusive spirit. The park is vast — if you rely on walking, a full day may not be enough. The management thoughtfully provides bicycles, golf carts, and guided tour trams for rent. There are also restaurants for visitors to dine in, along with small shops scattered throughout the park where you can purchase local products, specialty snacks, and drinks to experience local flavours. Each attraction is equipped with informational signs in both Thai and English, explaining the history and features of the buildings. To prevent visitors from getting lost, park maps are also placed at various corners!

Transportation Information for the Ancient City (Muang Boran) 72 Provinces

Located in Samut Prakan Province, it is a bit of a distance from Bangkok city — driving takes about an hour or more.

‑ Shuttle: On Saturdays and Sundays, a free shuttle service is provided from BTS Kheha Station. Take the BTS Skytrain Green Line to Kheha Station (E23), exit, and head down to street level to wait for the free shuttle.

‑ Taxi: From BTS Kheha Station (E23), take a taxi — if there is no traffic, the ride takes about 10 minutes.

‑ Bus: Take Bus No. 511 to the terminal, then transfer to Mini Bus No. 36, which will drop you off on the main road outside the Ancient City; walk in from there.

Samut Prakan Province is also known as "Paknam" (the river‑mouth city), and Thai‑Chinese use the Thai word Paknam to transliterate it as Beilang Province. In the past, Samut Prakan was an important port city of Thailand. Located in central Thailand, it sits at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River, with the river's estuary within its bounds. The province covers approximately 1,004.1 square kilometres, about 25 kilometres from Bangkok. Its territory borders Bangkok to the north, the Gulf of Thailand to the south, Chachoengsao Province to the east, and faces Bangkok and Samut Sakhon Province. Much of the province is low‑lying, and local residents have traditionally relied on fishing for their livelihood. Today, the province is home to numerous industrial zones and large factories, and it is also the site of Bangkok's current Suvarnabhumi Airport. Due to its proximity to Bangkok, many visitors plan short trips here to enjoy attractions such as the Ancient City, the Erawan Museum, and the crocodile farm. Samut Prakan has a significant expatriate community, with English widely spoken, and there are shops and restaurant districts catering to foreign residents and tourists.

Erawan Museum: The elephant seems to have become a symbol of Thailand. While travelling in Thailand, you see and feel elephants everywhere. The Erawan Museum is divided into three main sections: the "Underworld" in the basement, the "Beautiful Earth" on the first floor, and the "Heaven" within the elephant's belly, each showcasing different themes. Each theme represents art with different meanings, making one feel as though stepping into a mysterious and beautiful mythological palace. It invites simple appreciation without overthinking — each piece is a sacred, finely crafted work of art, and at times, a transposition of past, present, and future. The "Underworld" exhibits mainly feature antique furniture and porcelain from China's Ming and Qing dynasties; "Beautiful Earth" houses a tall shrine displaying Chinese and Thai artworks. "Heaven" enshrines Buddha relics and important Buddha images, with a stained‑glass ceiling painted by a German artist depicting the world's five continents and Western zodiac constellations. When sunlight streams through the ceiling, the floor is bathed in a colourful, beautiful display. Visitors can also take an elevator directly to the sacred hall within the elephant's belly. From above, the surrounding scenery is charming, and the Thai‑style gardens around the museum, with bridges and flowing water, create a serene atmosphere.

Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo, also known as the Crocodile Farm, is located in the Samut Prakan district, 8 kilometres south of Bangkok city centre, and is the world's largest crocodile farm. Founded in 1950 by Thai‑Chinese businessman Yang Haiquan, it has been meticulously managed for over fifty years, expanding continuously. It now breeds over 60,000 crocodiles of various species from around the world, ranging from hatchlings of just over twenty centimetres to the world's largest, measuring 6 metres in length and weighing 1,114 kilograms — a truly impressive sight. Mr. Ji Xianlin included an essay about visiting the Thai crocodile farm in his book "A Lifetime of Journeys", in which he was received by founder Mr. Yang Haiquan. In the essay, Mr. Ji also mentioned that the two must‑see things in Thailand are the ladyboys and the crocodiles at Samut Prakan.
