EasyCard vs iPASS
What are they?
EasyCard and iPASS are Taiwan's "transport and micro‑payment cards", similar to Hong Kong's Octopus or Japan's Suica. One card can be used for the MRT, buses, and Taiwan Railways, and also to buy drinks at convenience stores.
What can they do?
Transport: Taipei / Taoyuan / Taichung / Kaohsiung MRT, buses across Taiwan, Taiwan Railways local trains, YouBike, and the Kaohsiung LRT can all be used. The HSR is not supported and requires a separate ticket.
Payments: At major convenience store chains (7‑11, FamilyMart, etc.), supermarkets, Starbucks, and drugstores, just tap the card on the sensor to pay wherever you see the contactless payment logo.
How to buy and how to use?
Purchase: Available at airport convenience stores, MRT stations, and convenience stores across Taiwan. An empty card costs around NT$100, and the card fee is non‑refundable (we offer better value here)
Top‑up: Use MRT add‑value machines or convenience store counters. Cash only in New Taiwan Dollars, minimum NT$100 per top‑up, maximum card balance NT$10,000.
Usage: Tap the card on the sensor area when entering/exiting gates or at checkout, and you will hear a beep when the payment is deducted.
Card refund: Standard cards can have the remaining balance refunded, but the card fee is non‑refundable. For themed cards, we recommend keeping them as souvenirs.
What's the difference between the two cards?
EasyCard originated in Taipei, with more information available in the north and a wider selection of themed cards. iPASS originated in Kaohsiung, with more promotional offers in the south.
Other than that, both cards are now accepted interchangeably across Taiwan's MRT, buses, and convenience stores, and their functions are almost identical.
Which one should you choose?
Arriving/departing via Taipei or first‑time visitor to Taiwan → EasyCard
Mainly travelling in Kaohsiung/Tainan → iPASS
Travelling across both north and south → Either card will do
No need to buy both. Buy one card at the airport convenience store before departure, top it up with NT$500 to NT$1,000, and you can easily enjoy your entire trip.
