FAQs

Want to play in the snow in Melbourne during winter? Mt Buller is definitely the top choice! Not only is it close to the city, but the facilities are also well‑equipped and super friendly to beginners. However, there are still quite a few things to keep in mind on your first trip up the mountain — make sure to avoid these common pitfalls!

Q1 How to choose an instructor?

Skiing is not something you can learn just by watching videos. Especially for your first time up the mountain, it is highly recommended to hire an instructor!

Mt Buller offers courses in both Chinese and English, with options for private or group lessons. It is advisable not to choose group lessons, as with so many people in one class, you will hardly get any practice time. Small‑group classes are a more recommended option.

Q2 Do I need to buy a lift pass?

If you only plan to go up the mountain to enjoy the snow and take photos, then you don't need one.

But as long as you intend to ski (even just in the beginner area), you must purchase a lift pass, as it is essential for accessing the slopes.

Q3 Are there restaurants on the mountain?

Yes! The Mt Buller ski village has several cafés, restaurants, and small supermarkets, but prices tend to be a bit higher. It is advisable to bring your own simple snacks or a water bottle, which is also very practical.

Q4 When is the best time to ski?

The ski season at Mt Buller runs roughly from mid‑June to mid‑September each year.

The most reliable snow conditions are in July to August, but this is also when the crowds are at their peak.

If you want to avoid the peak season and still see snow, you can choose weekdays or visit Mount Buller in late June / early September.

Q5 Accommodation tips?

Ski‑in, ski‑out accommodation within the ski village is the most convenient, but prices are higher and it books up early.

If you are on a budget, you can stay in the town at the base of the mountain (such as Mansfield) and then take a shuttle or drive up.

Q6 Choosing a car for self‑driving?

During the declared snow season, all vehicles travelling to Mt Buller or Mt Stirling must carry diamond‑pattern wheel chains, and these are checked on site.

You can hire snow chains in Mansfield, Merrijig, or Mirimbah. It is best to hire them in advance to ensure the correct size for your vehicle. Once you are already on the mountain, you cannot hire chains.

If you are renting a car, be sure to ask whether it is covered for snow driving — some cars do not include snow risk coverage.

For detailed regulations on snow chains, please refer to this page.

Q7 How many days should I plan for skiing?

For a day trip, it is recommended to book transport directly so you don't get too tired. Once you arrive, you can take a lesson or ride the lift to enjoy the snow.

If you have two days and one night, you will have more time — use the first day to learn techniques and get used to the equipment.

Q8 What equipment should I bring for my first ski trip?

Ski equipment varies slightly depending on whether you plan to ski (two boards) or snowboard (one board). Day tours usually take you to a ski shop at the base of the mountain to rent equipment. You can book online in advance, and the package typically includes a ski jacket and pants, board/skis, ski boots, and a helmet. Personal essential accessories such as ski gloves, goggles, a beanie, and thermal socks cannot be rented, so remember to bring your own.
