This is a long‑awaited reunion

At the intersection of the old town's vibrant daily life and its cultural heritage in Dongguan City (Gun Sing), the name "Shan Chau" carries the collective memory of two generations of hotels. From the state‑owned Dongguan Shan Chau Hotel with its supporting facilities in the 1980s, to today's Shan Chau River Hotel under the Dongguan Memory project, this hotel IP rooted along the Shan Chau riverside has not only witnessed the urban transformation of Dongguan, but has also completed a stunning turnaround from basic accommodation and dining functions to a benchmark of cultural tourism integration, becoming a vivid epitome of old district revitalisation.

Looking back through history, the Dongguan Shan Chau Hotel was located at No. 67 Chau Min Fong, Dongguan, and mainly operated traditional hotel businesses such as a restaurant, guest rooms and karaoke. As one of the early state‑owned supporting hotels in Dongguan, it once provided convenient services to local residents and visiting merchants, and was also one of the landmark buildings in the old city at that time. Unfortunately, as the city developed, this hotel, which carried the memories of a generation, gradually faded from the stage of history.

The departure of the old hotel was not the end of the "Shan Chau" IP, but rather the beginning of cultural continuity and business upgrading. With the renewed debut of the Dongguan Memory District, Shan Chau River Hotel has made its return as promised. At the end of 2025, on the former site of the state‑owned textile company, directly opposite the old "Shan Chau Hotel", a brand‑new cultural theme hotel — Shan Chau River Hotel — officially opened for operation.

1. This is a "Lingnan Cultural Hall" that you can stay in

"Restoring the old as it was, and recreating the classics" is the original aspiration and determination of Shan Chau River Hotel. According to the general manager of the hotel, the architectural design preserves traditional Lingnan elements such as the gable walls (wok‑fuk wall), while the guest rooms are meticulously crafted with Dongguan‑themed touches including water ripples, alleyways, and cloud shadows. The hotel also features diverse offerings such as an intangible cultural heritage gathering space, the creative Dongguan‑flavoured Shan Chau Banquet, a rooftop agarwood (gah yau) forest, and a riverside meeting room, deeply integrating Lingnan culture with modern accommodation experiences to create a "Lingnan Cultural Hall" that guests can stay in.

In terms of spatial design, the hotel has put the concept of "restoring the old as it was" into practice. The guest room areas on levels 2 to 6 of the main building recreate the commercial atmosphere of Dongguan during the early days of reform and opening up, blending in classic 1990s interior styles to precisely awaken the emotional resonance of locals. On level 7, the meeting rooms and banquet hall cater to the diverse needs of business travellers, such as team‑building and meetings.

The guest rooms in the corridor wing are particularly distinctive — one side faces the arcaded building (tong lau) landscape along Chung Shing Road, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the unique charm of the architectural style; the other side adjoins Shan Chau River, with windows opening onto scenic riverside views. The top floor (Level 8) features a large terrace, where guests can ascend to overlook the entire Dongguan old town, making it an ideal spot for visitors to experience the charm of the old district and take memorable photos.

It is worth mentioning that the hotel has also carefully selected quality products from Dongguan for its various amenities. According to the general manager, the bedding, pillows, mattresses and other items in the guest rooms are all high‑quality locally made products from Dongguan, allowing guests to feel the quality and warmth of Dongguan manufacturing in even the finest details. At the same time, the hotel also emphasises personalised and convenient services, offering family room configurations, in‑room dining, baby and toddler supplies, and other thoughtful services to meet the needs of different guest groups, from family trips to business travel.
