Visit the ancient Temple of Poseidon, majestically perched at Cape Sounion
Watch the sunset over the Aegean Sea for a breathtaking, unforgettable experience

Set off from Athens and head south for 70 kilometres to discover a rendezvous of sea, mountains and mythology — the Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon tour invites you to immerse yourself in Greece's romance and rich heritage. With both morning and sunset time slots available, every journey can be tailored to suit your preference.

Surprises await along the way — outside your window lies the sparkling Saronic Gulf, where azure waters mirror the deep blue sky, and the sea breeze carries the gentle warmth of the Mediterranean as you cruise along the picturesque coastal road. En route, you'll stop at Lake Vouliagmeni, a natural lake formed by a crustal collapse two thousand years ago. Its waters remain comfortably warm all year round, and the mineral‑rich springs are naturally therapeutic. Surrounded by rocky cliffs and caressed by gentle breezes, it forms a healing natural tableau and serves as an unmissable rest stop on your journey.

The heart of the journey is the Temple of Poseidon, standing atop the cliffs of Cape Sounion. This ancient structure, contemporary of the Parthenon, is built of gleaming white marble. Its surviving Doric columns still radiate grandeur, looking imposingly over the boundless Aegean Sea, capturing the weight of history and the majesty of the sea god in full splendour. This is a sanctuary of myth and a witness to history — your guide will take you deep into the temple's rise and fall, sharing the legend of King Aegeus of Athens and bringing the millennia‑old ruins vividly to life.

During sunset, the temple is nothing short of breathtaking — as the sun slowly sinks into the Aegean Sea, the sky is painted in shades of orange and pink, gilding the ancient columns with a golden glow. With the sea breeze and the sound of waves as your companion, it creates a stunning sunset panorama and the perfect moment for photos. From May to October, you can also unlock a beach experience — swim in crystal‑clear waters and enjoy a fresh, delicious seaside lunch with the sea breeze, soaking up the warmth and laid‑back charm of the Greek coast.

Whether you are a history enthusiast, a nature‑loving wanderer, or a traveller seeking to escape the bustle, this journey fulfils every notion you have of Greece. From above, the archaeological site of Sounion blends seamlessly with the Aegean Sea, offering a sweeping view of stunning landscapes; strolling along the cliff edge, the sea breeze carries the essence of history, making every breath poetic. While the time is right, set out from Athens and answer the call of Sounion — amid the mountains and the sea, discover Greece at its most captivating.
