Naoshima in the Seto Inland Sea, once a bustling industrial town, has transformed into a world‑renowned contemporary art pilgrimage site. On this island of less than 8 square kilometres, art and everyday life blend perfectly, making it a healing hidden gem for a slow day trip. Departing from Takamatsu or Uno, you can easily reach the island by ferry, with each route offering a different flavour of Naoshima.

Takamatsu and Uno are the most convenient departure points for Naoshima, with frequent ferry services and no complicated transfers required upon arrival. If you prefer to explore freely, cycling is an option. Rent a bike and ride along the coastal paths, with the sea breeze on your face. You can stop anytime along the way to see Yayoi Kusama's red pumpkin standing by the shore, admire the scattered art installations by the sea, and immerse yourself in the collision of the island and art.

If you prefer a hassle‑free and convenient option, public buses are an excellent choice, taking you directly to key landmarks such as the Chichu Art Museum and the Lee Ufan Museum. The Chichu Art Museum, designed by Tadao Ando, is built underground, where Monet's "Water Lilies" shimmers under natural light, while the minimalist style of the Lee Ufan Museum brings a sense of calm. In the afternoon, take a bus to the Honmura area, explore the Art House Projects, and see the beauty of symbiosis between old buildings and art.

In the evening, whether cycling or taking a bus back to the port, you can catch the sunset glow over the Seto Inland Sea. The beauty of Naoshima lies in the masterpieces of artists and in the breeze and streets by the sea. A single day is enough to soak in the relaxation and romance of this art island, leaving unforgettable healing memories.
