Known affectionately as "Konpira", this shrine is the head shrine of all shrines named "Kotohira" or "Konpira" across Japan and has been a centre of faith for the sea god since ancient times. The stone steps stretch for 1,368 steps, and the area around the lower steps is bustling with cafes, tea houses, souvenir shops, and udon noodle restaurants.

The "Shikoku Pilgrimage" involves visiting 88 temples associated with Kobo Daishi (Kūkai) in a prescribed order, and is a famous religious pilgrimage in Japan. Among these 88 temples, Zentsū‑ji in Kagawa Prefecture is said to have been founded by Kūkai's father, Saeki Zentsū, and is the birthplace of Kobo Daishi. In addition to the usual incense offering and prayer, you can also experience the "Kaiden Meguri" (Circumambulation of the Ordination Hall) and contemplate the meaning of life in profound darkness.
