▼Fukiwari Falls ‑ The “Little Niagara Falls” of the EastAbout 60 minutes

Fukiwari Falls (吹割の滝) is located in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture. It is hailed as the “Niagara Falls of the East” and is a nationally designated scenic spot and natural monument of Japan.

Fukiwari Falls

Standing at 7 metres high and over 30 metres wide, this waterfall with its splashing waters is known as the Niagara Falls of the East. The soft parts of the riverbed bedrock have been eroded by the river water, creating numerous crevices. The largest of these cracks became the waterfall, which appears as though the water has split the huge rocks apart, hence the name “Fukiwari Falls” (literally “blowing and splitting falls”).

The falls, formed by water erosion which is also academically valuable, attract many visitors. During the fresh green season in April and May, the waterfall incorporates snowmelt water and flows with grandeur; in autumn, it harmonises with the beauty of the valley, set off by crimson maple leaves. Visitors can enjoy different scenery throughout the four seasons.

Masutobi Falls

This waterfall is located in the downstream section of the Fukiwari Gorge. In the old days, trout used to swim upstream in the “Katashina River”, a tributary of the Tone River, but when they reached this waterfall, they could not swim further upstream due to the great difference in elevation. Because the trout desperately tried to leap up the falls, it earned its name. It is 15 metres high and over 6 metres wide.

▼Gunma's Famous Hot Spring ‑ Ikaho Onsen Sekisho Street (Stone Steps)About 70 minutes of free time, from 6 April to 30 June and 1 September to 19 December

Ikaho Onsen, as renowned as Kusatsu, is located halfway up Mount Haruna. Around 600 AD, a volcanic eruption brought forth scalding hot springs. By around 1570 during the Sengoku (Warring States) period, after planned development, it became a renowned convalescent facility for wounded soldiers.

Ikaho Onsen enjoys nationwide fame in Japan for its two types of spring water. When the iron‑rich spring water oxidises upon contact with air, it turns a murky tea colour ‑ this is the “Golden Spring” (sulphate spring), a drinking spring that is quite rare in Japan. It is said to relieve neuralgia, skin diseases, and hypertension. Moreover, many women who had been unable to conceive reportedly became pregnant after bathing in it, earning it the nickname “Child Treasure Spring”. The other type is the clear, colourless “Silver Spring” (silicate simple spring) that emerged in recent years, which helps with fatigue recovery and promotes good health. Over the years, not only have ordinary tourists visited, but countless literary and artistic figures have also made the journey, including the great Japanese novelist Natsume Soseki, painter Takehisa Yumeji, and novelist Tokutomi Roka ‑ all devoted bathers.

Ikaho Onsen Sekisho Street (Stone Steps) has a total of 365 steps. We recommend climbing all the way to the top for a photo opportunity. Then visit Ikaho Shrine. The history of Ikaho Shrine can be traced back to 825 AD. It enshrines the deity of hot springs and the deity of medicine, reflecting the revered status of the healing hot springs of Ikaho Town. Locals believe that climbing the 365 stone steps to reach Ikaho Shrine brings good luck and financial fortune. Shops and cafés in the town line the stone steps, offering plenty of pleasant resting spots along the way. Once you reach the top of the steps, you can enjoy a panoramic view of all of Ikaho from the beautiful shrine.
