Windmills, Cheese and Clogs: A Countryside Tour from Amsterdam is a classic journey that takes travellers from the bustling Dutch capital back in time to the Dutch Golden Age. This route is not only about sightseeing, but also an in‑depth cultural tour of the Dutch spirit and traditional crafts. The tour usually departs near Amsterdam Central Station, boarding a comfortable sightseeing bus, and first arrives at the world‑famous "Zaanse Schans". This is not a man‑made theme park, but a still vibrant original village that preserves the most complete collection of windmills in the Netherlands. Entering the village, visitors are greeted by rows of colourful wooden houses and ancient windmills that are still in operation. These windmills were once the engine of the Dutch economy, used for grinding grain, pressing oil, sawing wood, and even making paper.

Here, visitors can get up close to these giant wooden structures spinning in the wind and listen to the roar of history. Next, the guide will lead everyone into a clog workshop to learn about this unique Dutch invention. Clogs are not only a folk symbol but also a testament to the wisdom of past labourers in coping with the damp, low‑lying lands. Visitors can watch craftsmen make clogs using both traditional and modern tools, and even try on these "Dutch national treasures" for a photo opportunity.

The itinerary will lead travellers to a cheese factory, where through a guided tour, they can learn about the process of making Dutch cheese from raw milk to the final product, and enjoy tastings of cheeses with different maturities in the sampling area, paired with traditional Dutch tulip‑shaped pastries, offering an ultimate treat for the taste buds. Leaving the windmill village, the bus will head to the shores of the Ijsselmeer, arriving at the beautiful harbour town of Volendam. This was once a famous herring fishing centre and still retains a strong fishing village atmosphere and traditional costume culture. Visitors can stroll along the docks, admire the colourful boats and fairytale‑like wooden houses. If it's a weekend, you might even see local women wearing traditional pointed hats and floral skirts, as if stepping into a historical painting.

If time permits, the tour will also visit Edam, a town famous for its cheese. This town not only boasts well‑preserved city gates and canals but is also the birthplace of the famous red wax‑coated round cheese. Here, visitors can wander around the old square, step into cheese shops to buy souvenirs, and experience the slow‑paced life of the Dutch countryside. This trip perfectly blends natural scenery, craft experiences, and local cuisine, allowing travellers to take in the three most iconic Dutch elements—windmills, cheese, and clogs—in a single day. It is an absolute must‑do itinerary when visiting Amsterdam.
