Departing from Hobart to Mount Field National Park, you can see both towering ancient eucalyptus trees and the spectacular Russell Falls. With its dense forests rich in negative oxygen ions, it is also known as a natural oxygen bar. In the afternoon, we will visit the beautiful Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. The Orchid House, often used as a wedding venue, is filled with a stunning variety of flowers.

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, located in Hobart, was established in 1818 and is the second oldest botanical garden in Australia, covering approximately 14 hectares. This botanical garden not only has a long history but also houses a collection of rare plants from around the world, making it a paradise for plant enthusiasts.

The garden boasts a rich variety of plant species, including both native Tasmanian plants and introduced species from Europe, Asia, Africa, and even Antarctica. The garden is divided into four main functional areas: the Plant Collection Area, which displays over 6,500 species; the Feature Landscape Area, including a Japanese Garden and a Subantarctic Plant House; the Theme Garden Area, featuring a Rose Garden, Tropical Plant Zone, and Fruit and Vegetable Cultivation Area; and the Research and Conservation Area, which carries out endangered plant protection and seed bank projects.

Most astonishingly, it is home to the only Subantarctic Plant House in the world, which simulates the climatic conditions of Macquarie Island and showcases the unique plants of that region. The garden also features a greenhouse with blooming flowers all year round, with various orchids taking centre stage in winter, adding colour to the cold season. The Japanese Garden area is planted with cherry blossoms and maple trees, creating a tranquil oriental courtyard atmosphere. In spring, the cherry blossoms form a sea of flowers, while in autumn, the maple leaves turn into a spectacle of red foliage, offering different beauties in every season.

Mount Field National Park and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are not only showcases of natural landscapes but also bear profound historical and cultural significance. During the Pleistocene epoch, the summit of Mount Field was covered by snowfields, with glaciers in the surrounding valleys. Numerous lakes in the park were carved out by glacial activity, indicating a geological connection with Antarctica. In 1982, Mount Field National Park was inscribed as part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, becoming part of a dual World Heritage site for both cultural and natural values.

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens bear witness to Tasmania's colonial history. Some trees in the garden can be traced back to the 19th century, including a large number of well‑preserved historical plant specimens. The Eardley‑Wilmot Historic Wall, stretching 280 metres, was built by convict labourers. Now, along this red brick wall, there are mixed flower borders and a rose arbour, perfectly blending history with nature.
