Attraction Highlights

The Kyoto Railway Museum is located in Kankiji‑cho, Shimogyo‑ku, Kyoto City. It opened on 29 April 2016 on the former site of the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum. As one of the three major railway museums in Japan, it covers an area of 30,000 m². Opening hours are 10:00‑17:00 (last admission at 16:30), closed every Wednesday and during the New Year holidays. Adult admission is 1,500 yen, while university and high school students pay 1,300 yen.

The core exhibition area of the museum is divided into multiple functional zones. The main exhibition hall spans three floors and displays 53 historic railway vehicles, including the British‑imported Class 1800 steam locomotive, the classic D51 steam locomotive, and the record‑breaking 500 Series Shinkansen. Visitors can observe the details of the vehicles up close, and even walk beneath a freight locomotive to view its internal structure. The museum also features a roundhouse built in 1914, where visitors can watch real‑time steam locomotive maintenance through glass windows. At the exit, the former Nijo Station building, constructed in 1904, is preserved as the oldest existing station in Japan. Additionally, the museum offers a variety of interactive experiences and leisure spaces. On the second floor, there is a restaurant and observation deck where visitors can dine while watching JR Kyoto Line and Shinkansen trains pass by. In spring, cherry blossoms can be enjoyed within the grounds. A dedicated children's play area allows kids to relax and have fun.

The Railway Time Machine Hall with 53 Classic Vehicles: This hall gathers 53 precious vehicles, ranging from Meiji‑era steam locomotives to modern Shinkansen, covering various types of railway equipment such as freight and passenger trains. It fully presents the evolution of Japan's railway technology over more than a century, allowing railway enthusiasts to closely appreciate the craftsmanship and historical value of each vehicle.

Immersive Railway Professional Experience: The museum features multiple train conductor training simulators that recreate Shinkansen driving scenarios, allowing visitors to personally experience the thrill of high‑speed travel. Additionally, visitors can add a 300‑yen option to enjoy a 10‑minute steam train ride, reliving the romance of the steam era.

Large‑Scale Railway Model Scene: The museum boasts one of Japan's largest railway model scenes. Professional operators drive miniature trains through realistic terrain, replicating the operational status of Japan's nationwide railway network. Both children and railway enthusiasts can experience the joy of train dispatching.

Family‑Friendly Play Space for All Ages: A dedicated children's play area is set up for families. At the same time, the museum's exhibits combine interactive explanations with hands‑on observation, satisfying the in‑depth exploration needs of railway enthusiasts while allowing children to learn railway knowledge through play—offering a dual experience of education and entertainment.

Retro Architecture and Seasonal Scenery: The museum preserves the 1914 roundhouse and the 1904 former Nijo Station building, catering to historical architecture enthusiasts. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom within the grounds, allowing visitors to enjoy the flowers while exploring railway exhibits, creating a unique seasonal railway tourism experience.
