Product Details

The Forbidden City in Beijing was the imperial palace of 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties in China, and is also the best place to understand ancient Chinese architecture, history and culture. Here you can learn about China's long‑standing cultural traditions. As the largest and most well‑preserved ancient architectural complex in existence today, its spatial layout, three‑dimensional effects and majestic form are all extremely rare in ancient times, which is why it has been listed as a "World Cultural Heritage" site by UNESCO. Some of the palaces in the Forbidden City also house comprehensive historical and art galleries, painting galleries, specialised ceramics galleries, the Four Treasures of the Study gallery, and exhibitions of Qing dynasty court artefacts and relics, with a large collection of precious ancient artworks. The daily clock demonstration at the Clock Gallery is also not to be missed.

After 14 years of construction, the Forbidden City served as the residence of Chinese emperors and their families for more than 500 years from 1420 to 1924, and was also the ceremonial and political centre of the Chinese government.

The main gate of the Forbidden City, the Meridian Gate, resembles a pair of wings, guarding this solemn palace steeped in history.

Towers were built at each of the four corners of the Forbidden City's city walls, and these are the parts of the palace most easily seen by ordinary people living outside the walls. As a result, many folk tales and legends about this palace have been passed down among the people.

The Palace Museum showcases to the fullest the splendour of ancient Chinese imperial palaces and the distinctive features of traditional‑style architecture.

After a heavy snowfall, the Forbidden City is painted in silver‑white, presenting an elegant and tranquil scene in the serene winter.

The Palace Museum has been listed by UNESCO as the world's best‑preserved ancient wooden architectural complex.
