Located within Hakone City on the southeastern side of Mount Fuji, Ōwakudani is a renowned tourist attraction in Hakone. This popular Japanese sightseeing spot is a volcanic crater formed by a massive eruption on the northern slope of Mount Kami about 4,000 years ago during the late stages of Hakone's volcanic activity. Most of the spring water in Ōwakudani is toxic, hence it was once known as "Great Hell." It was renamed Ōwakudani in 1876 when Emperor Meiji visited the site.
