▼Yufuin (also known as Yufuin Onsen)

"Yufuin (also known as Yufuin Onsen)" is the No. 1 travel destination voted by Japanese girls. Surrounded by high mountains, Yufuin has a serene and gentle ambience that allows visitors to relax completely. In addition, the many delicious dessert shops in Yufuin are a delight for women. Enjoying the beautiful scenery while satisfying your taste buds, you will be completely enveloped in happiness. There are also many cafés here, so you can find a café you like and sit down for a cup of coffee to enjoy a leisurely time.

The "sightseeing horse carriage" in Yufuin started over 30 years ago and has now become a famous tourist attraction. The route starts from JR Yufuin Station, passes through Butsuzan‑ji Temple and Unagi‑hime Shrine, then returns to the station, taking about 60 minutes in total. As the horse sways gently in the breeze and you look out over the beautiful pastoral scenery against the backdrop of Mount Yufu, your mind gradually relaxes and you can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Yunotsubo Street is located at the foot of Mount Yufu, lined with souvenir shops selling Oita specialities such as yuzu kosho, as well as restaurants serving local delicacies like fried chicken and tempura. The street is always bustling with visitors. In addition, the banks of the Oita River, just one street away, are a recommended walking spot where you can enjoy the scenery of the four seasons and experience the rustic charm unique to Yufuin, including pastoral landscapes.

"Kinrin Lake" Lastly, we come to the most famous Kinrin Lake in Yufuin. As the lake lies at the foot of Mount Yufu, it was originally named "Gakumoto‑ike" or "Gakushita‑ike". However, in 1884, a Confucian scholar named Mori Kūkū saw the fish scales shimmering with golden light under the setting sun and named it "Kinrin Lake" (Golden Scales Lake). Kinrin Lake has a circumference of about 400 metres and a depth of 2 metres. Hot springs gush out from the west side of the lakebed, while fresh water gushes from the east side. The temperature difference between the hot spring water and the fresh water causes mist to form over the water surface as soon as the temperature drops, creating a hazy, dreamlike and mysterious sight. It is truly a remarkable lake. Beside Kinrin Lake stands "Tenso Shrine"; the torii gate standing at the lake's edge appears to float on the water. The mist creates a misty, ethereal beauty that adds to its mystery, creating a fantastical space. When visiting Yufuin, be sure to take a stroll along the shores of Kinrin Lake to experience its charm.

▼Kyushu Natural Animal Park

When travelling to Beppu or Yufuin Onsen in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, you must not miss the "Kyushu Natural Animal Park", which is highly popular among locals and is the largest safari park in Japan. You can board the park's animal‑shaped jungle bus to feed lions, elephants and black bears, and also see giraffes, rhinos, zebras and other animals living on the grassland. This is a rare and valuable experience in Japan and is definitely a must‑visit family activity in Kyushu! At the "Small Animal Interaction Area", you can get up close and personal with cats and dogs, experience pony rides, and feed kangaroos and squirrel monkeys. Both adults and children will find it deeply therapeutic.

▼Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell)

"Beppu Jigoku ‑ Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell)" Beppu is the hot spring area with the largest water output in Japan. When visiting Beppu, don't miss the Beppu Jigoku Meguri (Hell Tour). Among the eight hells, "Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell)" is the largest. Formed by the eruption of Mount Tsurumi around 1,200 years ago, its mysterious porcelain‑blue pond water looks like cool sea water but is actually a hot spring at 98°C. The spectacular scene of the gushing spring water is truly awe‑inspiring and is one of the must‑visit attractions for tourists.

▼Kamado Jigoku (Oven Hell)

The Beppu area has numerous hot springs, most of which bear the name of "Hell". The most famous are the eight great hell hot springs of Beppu: Umi Jigoku, Oniishi Bozu Jigoku, Yama Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, Oniyama Jigoku, Shiraike Jigoku, Chi‑no‑ike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) and Tatsumaki Jigoku. Kamado Jigoku is one of them. It is said that since ancient times, at the spring and autumn festivals of the local tutelary shrine, Kamado Hachiman Shrine, the heat of the hell was used to prepare festival food offerings, which is how it came to be called "Kamado Jigoku" (Oven Hell). The violent steam jets and gushing high‑temperature hot springs give the hell a water temperature of up to 90°C.
