Akureyri
Akureyri is the second largest city in Iceland and the capital of the north, situated at the head of Iceland’s longest fjord, Eyjafjörður, and is often referred to as the “Garden City by the Arctic Circle”. The landmark Akureyri Church, with its modern and minimalist design, offers a panoramic view of the city and the fjord. The iconic heart-shaped traffic lights symbolise the city’s warm hospitality. The Arctic Botanical Garden is the world’s northernmost botanical garden, home to over 7,000 species of polar plants. Nearby attractions include the magnificent Goðafoss waterfall and the Mývatn geothermal area. Local cuisine features fresh fjord seafood, Icelandic lamb soup, and rye bread, while local cod liver oil products and craft beer are also worth trying.
