Salzburg, the capital of the state of Salzburg in Austria, has a population of 153,377, making it the fourth largest city in Austria after Vienna, Graz and Linz. Located in the west of Austria, Salzburg is the gateway to the Alps. The city's architecture is predominantly Baroque, and its history is quite long. According to historical records, Salzburg is the oldest city within the territory currently administered by Austria. Salzburg is the birthplace of the musical genius Mozart, who spent more than half of his short life of less than 36 years in Salzburg. Salzburg is also the hometown of conductor Herbert von Karajan and the filming location of the movie 'The Sound of Music'. The Old Town of Salzburg was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.
