Miyakojima City

The name Miyako of Miyakojima is derived from the Ryukyuan Miyako dialect, where each syllable is separated; miyako means 'the place where oneself lives'. Miyakojima is a limestone island formed by the uplift of coral reefs, with flat terrain and no real rivers. However, due to its clay layers, it has abundant groundwater. Recommended tourist attractions: Henna Saki Lighthouse, Higashihenna Misaki, Nishihenna Saki, Ikema Bridge, Kurima Bridge, Makiyama Observatory, and Ryugujo Observatory.
