Okinawa City (Japanese: 沖縄市／おきなわし) is a city located in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, situated on the east coast of central Okinawa Island in the Ryukyu Islands, approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Naha City. It was established in 1974 through the merger of Koza City and Misato Village, and is the second-largest city in Okinawa Prefecture. The southeastern part of the city is home to the Okinawa Prefectural General Athletic Park, while the southwestern part features the Okinawa City Municipal Athletic Park and the municipal baseball stadium, which also serves as the spring training camp for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp of Nippon Professional Baseball. Professional sports teams based in Okinawa City include FC Ryukyu of the J.League and the Ryukyu Golden Kings of the B.League. Due to the presence of numerous US military bases in the surrounding area, including Kadena Air Base, the city has a rich international atmosphere, with many store signs in the downtown area displaying both Japanese and English. It also has a vibrant cultural scene, having produced many musicians.
