Kamiamakusa
Kamiamakusa City is located in the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, comprising over 120 islands of the Amakusa Archipelago, and is a hidden island gem on the west coast of Kyushu. It is renowned for dolphin watching, with about 200 wild dolphins inhabiting the surrounding waters, offering a high encounter rate on early morning boat trips. The Amakusa Five Bridges connect the islands, forming one of Japan's most scenic marine highways, with breathtaking sunrise and sunset views. The World Heritage site Sakitsu Church is nestled in a fishing village, blending Western and Japanese architectural styles. Shimoda Onsen faces the sea, providing a therapeutic hot spring retreat. Local cuisine features Amakusa sea urchin and fresh sashimi, while Amakusa grilled beef uses local wagyu, tender and juicy; seaweed ramen is light and savoury, full of island flavours.
