Shimonoseki is located at the westernmost tip of Honshu, guarding the Kanmon Strait, serving as a transport hub between Kyushu and Honshu, where history and seafood are equally emphasised. The Kanmon Strait can be crossed by ferry between Honshu and Kyushu, and the night view from the Kanmon Strait Observatory is stunning. The Shimonoseki Peace Memorial Hall (Shunpanro) bears witness to the history of the Treaty of Shimonoseki. Tsunoshima Lighthouse stands against the blue sea and sky like a painting. Karato Market is a seafood paradise, with freshly cut sashimi and sushi in abundance. The local cuisine is famous for fugu (blowfish) dishes; Shimonoseki is Japan's blowfish capital, where sashimi, hot pot, and fried fugu are all delicious. Mentaiko (spicy cod roe), grilled eel, Kanmon sushi, and Shimonoseki ramen are also highly distinctive and full of flavour.
