Fukuyama City is located in the southeastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, along the coast of the Seto Inland Sea, and is renowned for Tomonoura and Fukuyama Castle. Tomonoura is a tranquil old port town that retains the atmosphere of the Edo period and is the inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki's "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea"; the Tomonoura lantern and the Tomonoura Museum of History and Folklore are full of charm. Fukuyama Castle is a historic castle from the Edo period, with a museum inside displaying historical artefacts. The Onomichi – Fukuyama Cycling Path offers a scenic ride along the coast, with breathtaking views. Fukuyama Castle Park is particularly romantic when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. As for local cuisine, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is a highlight, featuring multi-layered savoury pancakes with rich ingredients; Fukuyama sushi, conger eel dishes, and Seto Inland Sea lemon-based dishes are refreshing; Fukuyama ramen and traditional Japanese sweets are also very popular.
