Takayama
Takayama (Hida Takayama) is renowned as 'Little Kyoto', with its well-preserved Edo-period castle townscape. The Sanmachi historic district features rows of black-walled wooden townhouses, traditional shops, sake breweries, and cafes arranged in a charming scatter. Takayama Jinya is the only surviving Edo-period government office in Japan. The Miyagawa Morning Market bustles with local life, where you can sample freshly grilled Hida beef skewers. Hida Folk Village showcases Gassho-zukuri and other old farmhouses. In terms of cuisine, Hida beef (a top-tier Japanese wagyu, with sukiyaki and steak that melt in your mouth) is highly esteemed. Takayama ramen (chicken-based thin noodles), Hoba miso (miso grilled on a magnolia leaf), Hida buns, and sake offer rich flavours well worth savouring.
